come talk to a dad, his several children, and a moth nanny

Soft hums, their tranquil vibrations soothing listening ears, stemmed from a location amidst trees and underbrush. If one were to follow these docile tones they would be met with none other than the sight of a lone man, huddled together with his pokemon, each resting themselves near him as he sat with his legs crossed, continuing his lullaby.

To his left there was a Gothitelle, her focus fixated on leaves and flowers piled before her. To his right an Elekid, the mighty bean slumbering, slumped up against his leg. In his lap, a Teddiursa, curled up into a ball and quietly snoozing. And behind him, a Volcarona, it’s body sufficing as a warm cushion for the man to lean himself against.

With the end of his lullaby as it slowly trailed off, the man’s head would rise, spotting the presence that had come closer. Him and the two other conscious pokemon would take notice of whoever it may be, the Gothitelle as well and Volcarona on guard, but the man at ease as he remained seated.

“How do you do?” He would ask with a soft smile, awaiting an answer.

He hadn’t expected anyone to stray the path and wander into the woods, but if they made it here, then being friendly was the least he could manage; besides, he didn’t want to disturb the two resting heads that lay upon him.

"well," dorothy returns without missing a beat, matching his smile with one of her own. "just taking a stroll. and you?"

dorothy hadn't expected to see anyone else this deep in the woods either, but if she's surprised, she doesn't show it. in her wicker basket, which she drops onto the ground, is plant matter: ferns, strips of bark, wildflowers that give off a heady, drunken scent like rose perfume. she'll make potpourri out of them when she gets home. her patients have come to associate her with the scent.

"are these sweethearts yours?" she says in reference to the various pokemon strewn around him. she lifts her hand, flutters her fingers toward the gothorita in a silent hello. "they're just darling. i remember when my own pokemon were younger..." she sighs. "they're all grown up now. i feel like i should be sending them off to college or something."

howdy, i put gothitelle instead of gothorita in the first post, whoops

An answer to what he might be doing was not given, it was obvious after all and he felt no need to add onto it. But who could blame her for being courteous. Instead he would simply smile, tilting his head at the question, remaining silent as she continued on.

"They are all mine, yes. And don't let their looks fool you. All, save this Elekid, have been with me since I was a child, they are not young."

Stroking the Teddiursa's fur he would look at the basket she had sat down, then quickly return his gaze back onto her eyes.

"I'm assuming you've fully evolved your pokemon... might I ask the members of your team?"

[break][break]

Kim would adjust his seating position to lean further into the moth pokemon, the Volcarona's fur pushing itself outward, intertwining with the man's own hair. The Gothorita moved itself closer, keeping it's eyes on the woman, and taking a seat nearer to the man than before, leaving her assortment of goodies in their place and ignoring the woman's hand gesture.

her eyes slightly widen. "i see!" she says, touching her hand to her lips in a gesture of mild surprise. "with so many friends, you must have never been lonely."

he asks about her team. dorothy hesitates for a moment, considers lying, but in the end decides against it. maybe this will come back to bite her later. "a malamar and a hypno," she says, and remembers cradling a washed-up, palm-sized inkay in her hands, remembers all the sleepless nights before she caught a drowzee. her eyes mist over.

"they're my coworkers as well as my friends. i'm a therapist, see, so they're a big help in my line of work. my clients love them."

The Gothorita would readjust her position once more, lifting the man’s arm and draping it over herself as she leaned into him. Kim would give a slight sigh, a smile following.

“No, I can’t say I was ever lonely. But I do feel I’ve spoiled them a bit too much, especially Uaid… the Teddiursa.”

The cub would remain curled up in the mans lap, sleeping soundly.

Once she answered him about her teammates he would smile a little brighter.

“Ah.” He’d exclaim aloud. “How uncute.” He would continue under his breath, the Gothorita hearing and giggling lightly; a dark hand covering her lips whose edges curved slightly upwards

“Your pokemon must love you considering you have given them shelter as well as work. And for a job as important as therapy, your presence in their lives must be nothing short of a blessing.”

A soft and sincere smile followed his words, his free hand patting the grass before him.

dorothy notices things. it's part of the job. she notices the way his lips continue to move though she can't hear his voice anymore, the way the gothorita laughs behind her slender hand. but she likes to let her observations accumulate first, like snowfall, before she draws correlations. a holistic approach, it's called. she smiles obliviously.

"you flatter me," she says, demurely looking away. "they do more for me than i do for them. sit with you? yes, i'd love to, if you don't mind." and she sits, resting her back against an orange-leafed tree, drawing her basket closer to her with her foot.

"i'm dorothy, by the way. do you live around here?" she hopes he doesn't, or at least that he's new. she hasn't seen him around petalburg before, and she doesn't like people coming and going through her city without her knowledge.

Her acceptance to his invitation would bring about a quick change in air pressure, a gentle wind pushing through the leaves and underbrush then settling seconds after. A light inhale would stem from him, a sigh following suit as he settled his hands on his legs, his smile pulling slightly at the edges of his lips for a second before it returned to its previous tranquil state.

His eyes not once wandering from her features as she sent a question of her own his way. For a second he would think to himself, weighing the good and the bad that could come from meeting a new person. She seemed decent enough, but you can never be too careful with strangers.

“Call me Mick… It’s a nickname, I can’t say with honesty that I prefer my actual name.” He’d straighten himself up slightly. “I own property here but don’t stay for long. The people here are awfully drab, wouldn’t you say?”

so he doesn't quite live here. dorothy's shoulders fall ever so slightly, as natural as the rhythm of her body, in relief. she still doesn't like that she has never heard his name before, assuming that he tells everybody he meets to call him mick, but what can be done.

"no," she says, keeping her voice light and non-confrontational. "not at all. i find them delightful. but of course you're entitled to your own opinion." she has to admit that she's surprised to hear such a barb from him. he seems so courteous. "may i ask why you think so?"

“Well, Miss Dorothy,” He’d pause, his hand setting itself onto the sleeping cub that curled into his lap, gently stroking it’s small body.

“This place is pretty quiet, and some would enjoy it for obvious reasons, I’m not excluded in that aspect of course, but the quiet here is unsettling.”

Again, he would pause, adjusting himself and settling into a different seating position.

“The people are friendly and if you talk to them they’ll talk to you, but every word that comes from their mouths just seems drawn out and bothersome to hear, and the way they speak is almost grating to the ear. Along with that, there’s nothing to do here and the people themselves are no fun to be around, I’ve learned that first hand.”

“...Do you think it makes me a bad person for thinking that way, Miss Therapist?”

A smirk settled on his lips as he once again turned his attention towards her, the calm expression seeming to have remained through the duration of his explanation.

what a piece of work. she'll have to reevaluate her first impression of him.

"no," she repeats, "not at all." she feels like she's being challenged somehow. she shakes that feeling off, rolling her shoulders against the tree trunk's rough bark. it scratches against the fabric of her cardigan.

"what i think is that you get bored easily, hardly indicative of, erm, badness." there's probably a better word for that. "though i have to wonder. what does it take for you to get interested in something or someone?"
